Beach Safety

The following information provides an essential beach and sea safety guide for all water users. Knowledge of this guide may save your life. Remember that beach safety is an exercise of common sense.

Lifeguarded Beaches

Lifeguarded beaches operate a flag system to designate safer surfing and swimming areas. Water users MUST stay within the appropriate areas.

Water Currents and Rips

Rips can be primarily identified where wave are not breaking.
Always locate the rips before entering the water.
These "rips" must be avoided as they are the major cause of beach rescues.

To Escape a Rip Current

1.  Stay Calm.
2.  Stay with surf craft.
3.  Paddle or swim across the beach parallel to the shore.
Distress Signal :  One arm raised above head.

If you see anyone in trouble
