River Gannel Beach

The Gannel Estuary is tidal river which can be explored during low tide. This silted estuary used to be popular as a river channel on incoming tide bringing in coal, wood and sand to be distributed and provides a glimpse of the towns seafaring past. No longer navigable due to silt, there use to be schooners and lighters (barges) were poled or rowed up the river channel to Trevemper Bridge where it was off loaded. There are still traces of old boatyards, moorings and even derelict craft along the estuary. Away from the sea, the estuary now provides a vast recreation area and nature reserve full of plant and wildlife.

You can find The Gannel as you exit Newquay along the link road heading towards Mount Wise. There is limited parking, but the Estuary is an easy walk from town and also forms the starting point of the Newquay to Crantock circular walk. You can explore the Gannel Estuary on foot, kayak or canoe, bike or horseback.

The Gannel is a tidal river so be careful when and where you walk along the estuary. We advise you buy a tide timetable, plan a walk around the estuary avoiding high tide.

River Gannel beach unfortunately does not have lifeguard cover during the year, so you have to take extra precaution if swimming here. Please be sure to observe the beach safety code.
