Penhale Sands

Penhale Sands is an area of beach that at low tide create a beautiful three mile stretch of stunning golden sands with the adjoining Perranporth Beach. This beach is seldom busy, even with it location where it is. Penhale Sands Beach can produce some excellent surfing conditions, which makes it popular with surfers of all levels. The beach is backed by Cornwall's most diverse system of sand dunes.

Penhale Sands is part of a Special Area of Conservation and designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Behind the sandy beach is the Penhale Dunes. These are the most extensive system of sand dunes in Cornwall. The Cornish sand dunes are thought to have formed over 5,000 years ago as sea levels rose to approximately their present levels, and are the largest dune system within Cornwall and has a maximum depth of 48 metres sand.

Penhale Sands (Peran Treth, meaning St Piran's sands) is believed to be the landing site of Saint Piran. In the late 18th century, the remains were discovered of what is believed to be St Piran's Oratory, thought to be one of the oldest Christian sites in Britain. In 2014 the covering sand was removed to reveal a building more than a thousand years old, in a reasonable state of preservation.

Penhale Sands beach has lifeguards during the summer months that patrol each and everyday, from morning till dusk, so you can feel very safe if you fancy a swim. Please be sure to observe the flags, and the beach safety code.
