Marshland Mouth Beach

Marshland Mouth  beach is a quiet, untouched beach set in the Welcombe and Marshland Valleys Nature Reserve. This beach is right on the boundary between Devon and Cornwall with the river, Marshland Water, marking the boundary. Unfortunately, the best part of the beach lies in Devon, with the Cornish section, (although much longer), largely confined to rock platforms and stone but with sandy areas in summer. It is not an easy beach to get to and involves a walk along the Southwest Coastal Path.

A wonderful setting but the beach is not really described as a family beach. There is sand and shingle on the Devon side but south of the river it is dark grey stone, although patches of yellow sand are often exposed at low water. In the summer months there can be a build up of sand on the higher levels of the beach. Swimming can dangerous due to rip currents especially at low water; occasionally when there is no swell and surf it is possible to swim at high tide reasonably safely. There is good surfing at most stages of the tide for those who are experienced and know the location. There are good rock pools at low water.

This stretch of coast has inspired writers including Roland Duncan who lived at Marshland Mouth.

Marshland Mouth Beach, unfortunately does not have lifeguard cover during the year, so you have to take extra precaution if swimming here. Please be sure to observe the beach safety code.
